Two Rare Bicentennial Quarters That Could Give You $85 Million!

The Bicentennial Quarter has become one of the most iconic coins in U.S. history, not just for its role in commemorating the 200th anniversary of American independence, but also for its rare versions that can fetch astronomical values.

While the average Bicentennial Quarter is not worth much more than face value, certain rare versions have been known to sell for millions of dollars.

Some have even reached values of up to $85 million, making them one of the most coveted collectibles in the numismatic world. In this article, we will explore the history, special features, and value of these rare quarters.

History of the Bicentennial Quarter

In 1973, the United States government began planning for a major celebration of the nation’s 200th anniversary of independence in 1976. As part of the festivities, the government decided to mint a special commemorative coin.

This coin would serve as a reminder of the country’s historical achievement and feature a dual date of 1776-1976, marking two centuries of freedom.

The Bicentennial Quarter was minted by the Philadelphia Mint, as well as the Denver and San Francisco Mints. The quarter was unique not just in its design but in its symbolism.

The reverse featured a colonial drummer boy, with 13 stars surrounding the image to represent the original 13 colonies. The obverse featured the iconic profile of George Washington, the first U.S. president.

What Makes the Bicentennial Quarter Special?

Two versions of the Bicentennial Quarter were produced: one for public circulation and another for collector purposes.

  • Proof Edition: Produced at the San Francisco Mint, these coins have a high-quality finish and are prized by collectors for their superior condition.

Identifying Valuable Bicentennial Quarters

Not all Bicentennial Quarters are worth large sums of money, but certain traits can significantly increase their value. Here are some factors that can make your Bicentennial Quarter worth more than you might think:

1. Low Minting Numbers

Coins that were minted in small quantities tend to be highly sought after by collectors. The rarer the coin, the higher the demand and price.

2. Excellent Condition

Coins that have been kept in excellent, uncirculated condition are far more valuable than those that have been heavily used or worn.

3. Mint Marks and Errors

Some rare minting errors make a Bicentennial Quarter extremely valuable, such as double die errors, off-center errors, and other mistakes made during the minting process.

4. Historical Significance

The Bicentennial Quarter is associated with the 200th anniversary of American independence, which adds historical value to the coin.

Record Sales of the Bicentennial Quarter

Bicentennial Quarters with rare minting errors or that are in perfect condition have been sold at record prices. For example:
